Powering iron ore mining, rail and port project in West Australia

ABB distribution transformers facilitates temporary power at Roy Hill

The Roy Hill Project is a 55 million tons per annum (Mtpa) iron ore mining, rail and port project being developed in West Australia’s Pilbara region, one of the world’s premier iron ore provinces.

Both the Mine and Port power facilities were designed, engineered, constructed and commissioned by Energy Power Systems Australia (EPSA), Australia's specialized engine dealer.

Certainty to get big amount of high-quality distribution transformers in very short delivery time was crucial for the customer. The Roy Hill mining project is located in one of the most remote locations in the world, and with distribution transformer factory and service capability in Perth, West Australia; ABB was ideally located to support the project.

ABB has successfully provided 43 distribution transformers on time. The 3,750kVA 0.415/33kV transformers are key to the infrastructure built to provide back-up power for the Roy Hill mine, north of Newman, as well as providing the only power source to stockpile and transfer iron ore from mine to ships at Port Hedland.

ABB has produced the large quantity of transformers with minimal lead-time required for the project. Proactive support on a consulting level, from design, through installation, and in after-sales support were also key-criteria to meet the customer’s expectations.
