Hitachi ABB Power Grids' 420 kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) supports the integration of wind power into the Danish grid

The new interconnection between the substations at Kassø and Tjele doubles the transmission capacity and improve security of power supply with the help of interconnections linked to grids in Germany and Norway, replacing an existing line that is 45 years old. Power security is an important factor when integrating renewable energies like wind, due to their unpredictable and inconsistent nature. 

Hitachi ABB Power Grids supplied and installed 420 kV (kilovolt) GIS, type ELK-3 C to’s substation in Revsing. The extremely compact design enabled volume reduction by up to 33 percent and as much as 40 percent less SF6 insulating gas compared to predecessor products. This provided with a low environmental impact solution in a considerably smaller footprint.

The supplied ELK-3 C have been factory assembled, tested, and shipped as one bay in a container instead of multiple assembly units, which reduced installation and commissioning time at Revsing by up to 40 percent. In addition, GIS technology was chosen as it enabled the substation to be hidden in a beautifully designed building to preserve the aesthetics of the surroundings in Revsing.
