REB500 - Distributed busbar protection

The IEC 61850 enabled REB500 IED is designed to support different protection philosophies. You can create a distributed protection solution by assigning bay units into dedicated bay cubicles. In this distributed solution, the bay protection is assigned to separate bay units. Alternatively, you can integrate all necessary functionality into one or several centralized cubicles.

REB500 is using proven concepts and algorithms continuously used and improved for over 15 years. The unique signal prolongation principle enables continuous measurement and ensures correct operation of the busbar protection, even when the current transformers are heavily saturated during external faults. This principle ensures correct operation of the busbar protection instead of blocking the protection function and leaving the busbar unprotected.

REB500 detects all bus and feeder faults for any type of system earthing, whether it is an isolated system or a solidly, low impedance or compensated earthed system. It operates selectively for all faults in the protected zone and maintains complete stability for faults outside the protected zone. 

The integrated overall check zone feature is completely independent of the isolator position indications. This feature enables REB500 to remain stable in case the busbar replica is not valid.

REB500 is flexible to protect various busbar configurations under all circumstances. By integrating a versatile selection of protection functions, REB500 IEDs safeguard the complete bay and optimize switchyard protection, delivering adaptable, scalable functionality to changing needs throughout the entire life cycle of the installation.

REB500 supports IEC 61850-8-1 Edition 1 or Edition 2 as per user configuration including Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) according to IEC 62439-3. GOOSE can be used to initiate the integrated breaker failure protection.

REB500 supports user access management, user activity logging and centralized user account management. It also includes cyber security feature in compliance to security standards, such as NERC CIP and IEC 62351-8.

REB500 gathers vital process information and makes it easily available for the user. The information can be accessed via the local HMI at any of the REB500 IEDs in the protection system.

Data can also be accessed by connecting a PC to the IED. Using protection and control IED manager PCM600, HMI500 or WebHMI we offer an intuitive way to operate and maintain a REB500 installation.

HMI500 tool offers a comprehensive and easy-to-use graphical user interface for handling the distributed busbar protection REB500 throughout its life cycle. The tool allows you to configure and set parameters for the complete station protection system.

Backup protection offers distance protection and various current protection function integrated in the bay units. Combined with busbar differential protection, a complete protection system can be built using one central unit and one or several bay units. The four zone line distance protection enables protection of different overhead line and cable applications using different system earthing principles.

REB500 visualizes your station via a standard internet browser with the extensive Web HMI. The HMI provides a graphical single diagram with live breaker status including primary measurements and events.
