The innovative EconiQTM high-voltage solutions are set to play a pivotal role in transforming Scotland's power system.

SP Energy Networks is set to upgrade its Hunterston 420 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation with Hitachi Energy’s innovative EconiQTM high-voltage technology by 2025. This project represents a significant step in helping SP Energy Networks address the changing demand characteristics while meeting future regulatory net-zero targets.

The Hunterston GIS substation, built in 2016, is a crucial grid connection in the Scottish transmission network. SP Energy Networks is the UK's leading transmission and distribution operator, supplying electricity to 3.5 million homes and businesses in Central and Southern Scotland, Cheshire, Merseyside, North Shropshire, and North and Mid Wales. They have developed an ambitious plan to evolve their network for millions of customers to meet their decarbonization objectives within the RIIO-T2 timeline. Innovative solutions and new technologies like this are critical components for SP Energy Networks to achieve this transition.

This project is Hitachi Energy’s first-ever commercial order for EconiQ retrofill and also includes the delivery of four new EconiQ GIL ELK-3 420-kilovolt (kV) to expand the substation’s overall capacity. The refurbishment and extension projects are expected to be completed in 2025.

“At SP Energy Networks, we are committed to powering with purpose so we can all enjoy a cleaner and greener future. That is not just about connecting as many new green generations to the grid as quickly as possible. It is also about transforming our operations and infrastructure innovatively and sustainably,” said Pearse Murray, SP Transmission Director at SP Energy Networks. “This project with Hitachi Energy is an important step toward that journey and we look forward to seeing it come to fruition.”

“SP Energy Networks has a transparent and non-negotiable plan for a decarbonized future. The company’s approach to prioritizing clients’ needs without compromising on safety and security is something we share and can relate to,” said Markus Heimbach, Managing Director of the High Voltage Products business unit at Hitachi Energy.

“SP Energy Networks is truly setting the stage for the industry’s transformation by employing EconiQ retrofill solutions,” he added. “We are delighted to assist them in accelerating their journey to meeting future regulatory net zero targets through our EconiQ high-voltage portfolio that is 100 percent as reliable as the conventional solution.”

EconiQ is Hitachi Energy’s eco-efficient portfolio for sustainability, where products, services, and solutions are proven to deliver exceptional environmental performance. Hitachi Energy has placed sustainability at the heart of its Purpose, and is advancing the world’s energy system to be more sustainable, flexible, and secure.
