Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC Link

Enough electricity to serve around 80 million people


Hitachi Energy was selected by
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. to deliver the ±800 kV, 6,000 MW Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC link, which will transmit power from central India to consumers in the south, a distance of 1,830 km.

Hitachi Energy and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) had turnkey responsibility for execution, including system engineering, design, supply, and installation of the two UHVDC converter stations.

This link is Hitachi Energy sixth HVDC project in India and the second UHVDC project.

At full capacity, the Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC link will be able to supply enough electricity to serve around 80 million people, based on the national average per capita consumption. Ultrahigh voltage minimizes transmission losses, reducing CO2 emissions, and improves grid efficiency.

Hitachi Energy's UHVDC Classic technology enable efficient transmission of power of long distance with exceptionally low power losses and minimal footprint. The Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC transmission link at +/-800 kilovolt (kV), 6,000-megawatt (MW) stretches almost 1,800-kilometers to connect Raigarh in Central India to Pugalur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Reliable power can now be transmitted in either direction depending on demand, supporting the green power transition.

The converter valves and heart of Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC transmission link +/-800 kilovolt (kV), 6,000-megawatt (MW), enabling the convertion from AC power to DC power, for efficient long distance power transmission, and then back to AC power for reliable integration to the AC-grid.
